Parks Victoria

Collaboration

Thomson Hay Landscape Architects were engaged by Parks Victoria to prepare detailed site plans for the redevelopment of the day visitor area / boat ramp and campground at the Barmah Lakes camping and day visitor areas within the Barmah National Park.

Key design considerations included:

  • pedestrian and vehicle access and management within the environmentally sensitive flood plain and River Red Gum forest of the Murray River
  • defined camping zones
  • restriction of camping / picnicking to designated areas including controlled overflow use during busy periods
  • facility design and siting to minimise impacts during the regular flooding of the site associated with environmental flows that are vital to supporting the river’s ecological processes
  • facility design and siting to minimise activity around the older River Red Gums
