McLennan Street Mooroopna

Client

Collaboration

Tomkinson Group and VicRoads

Our brief was to upgrade the median of McLennan Street, Mooroopna, a generous 25m wide strip through the town centre. The design makes better use of the open space, with proposals for a green gateway, community gathering space, alfresco dining area and extension of the war memorial.

We worked closely with Tomkinson Group and VicRoads to integrate car park areas, bus and long vehicle bays, and pedestrian crossings in the design.

The forms, materials and colours of the gathering space are inspired by the nearby water hole on Goulbourn River, from which Mooroopna takes its name. We prepared the landscape masterplan in 2015, and are progressively documenting and constructing each block.

Key design challenges of the project included:

  • Redesign of the centre median into a safe, useful and social place for people
  • Inclusion of tree cells
  • Protection of a existing trees within the streetscape
  • Balancing carparking needs with a desire for pedestrian activation of the median
