Collaboration

Florian Living is a new residential community in the Ballarat West Growth Zone. The client wanted to create a park with wow factor that would sell the development. Another challenge on this project was to integrate existing site features including Bonshaw Creek and a historic mine shaft and mullock heap from the gold mining era into the design.

Solution

The estate name Florian means flowering or flourishing and this inspired the flowing forms, bright colours and plant selection in the design of the park.

The Florian Park provides a high level of amenity with an adventurous playground, large custom designed shelter, seating, circulation paths and shade trees. The existing mullock heap was spread and capped to create a gentle mound in the park. The highest accessible point of the playground is almost 5m above street level, making it an eye-catching feature from Tait Street. The design of the shelter was inspired by a flower in bloom, with colourful posts supporting a circular roof.

The topography slopes gradually to Bonshaw Creek which flows north to south through the site. The Bonshaw Creek linear park, up to 250m wide, will provide a green link with a strong path network through the heart of the development. The Bonshaw Creek linear park will be planted with species indigenous to the Ballarat region, enhance and improve biodiversity the creek corridor, provide fauna habitat and will allow opportunities for passive recreation.
